Director: Will Gluck
Distributor: Screen Gems
Released: September 17, 2007
Content: This movie follows Olive Penderghast and her best friend Rhiannon. To avoid going camping with Rhiannon and her family Olive makes up a date she has. When Rhiannon asks about it, she pressures Olive into saying she had sex with her date. Rumor gets around school, and Olive helps her friend Brandon look as though he is having sex with her at a party to stop bullies from picking on him. Soon geeky boys all over school are paying Olive in gift cards to pretend to have hooked up with her. Olive plays into being the modern day Hester Prynne, until she decides enough is enough.
Challenge: While this movie may be about a sex rumor, no sex is ever actually shown, although Olive and Brandon do make a show of making it sound like sex. So this movie may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13.
Why I chose it: This movie shows how fast rumors spread and how damaging they can eventually be.
Recommended Age: 13+
